  • Jen Smith gave a report on the community meetings this past week regarding the architectural plans for the school to become a community center, and for the park design. The meetings went well with a great representation of the different groups, and Tim Gallagher, the director of city parks gave a presentation on his perspectives.
  • It was discussed that there is a large lot between 70th and 75th St and 9th Ave that will be developed into a green space.
  • Bert Hopkins: Walkable Crown Hill: We are waiting to have a contract signed with the city finalized. He hopes to be able to send out the RFP at the end of next week for contractors. We have a six month project deadline once the contract is signed. He hopes to have the design charettes happen at the end of May and beginning in June. There is some work that needs to be done prior to the charrettes:
  1. Community surveys: we need to have volunteers that will go door-to-door to do surveys and to invite neighbors to participate in the charrettes.
  2. Department of Transportation: we need volunteers to do speed and volume residential streets. At the bare minimum, we would like to do volume checks.
  3. Need direct person-to-person invitations to participate in the three charrettes.
  4. Next Walkable Crown Hill meeting: Sunday, April 20, 4 to 6 p.m.
  • Carol Barber (in absence): The following two projects have not been initiated due to her injury, but she is still wanting to work on them:
    1. Negotiating with QFC about having reusable bags.
    2. A movie night
  • Mark Mendonca: Urban Gardeners
    1. The urban gardeners had their first work party helping Carol Barber, taking up tree roots and turning soil; it was a lot of fun and very successful.
    2. Jason and Lanae are making plans for their garden beds. They have 4500 square feet for a community garden.
    3. Other projects that people discuss they want to do are: Cinny: putting in a raised garden bed; Cinny: a chicken coop; Bert: will be plastering a cob oven in June or July; Lanae: would like help with raised beds and establishing the community garden. Bob mentioned again that he has greenhouse building material available to be used for construction of greenhouse.

    5. Lanae announced that she has lots of extra starts for various vegetables.

  • Carol Kennedy.
    1. 9076 Holman Rd.: Matt Driscoll,, the architect was not available to meet on April 18. A small group of involved citizens did meet and determined citizens’s priorities for the project. A neighbor of the project also mentioned that the developer is Mark Wolf, and he did attend the early design review meeting. It was suggested that Mark be invited to attend the meetings with the neighborhood group and the architect. They are hoping that a meeting will be set up at the end of April, but that has not been determined.
    2. Seattle Pedestrian Master Use Plan: This is agenda item at the Ballard District Council meeting this Wednesday at 7 p.m. Carol is unsure if she would be able to attend and asked for other volunteers.

  • Danielle LaVilla
    1. Bought a huge bolt of fabric that can be made into reusable bags. She said that there was an artist that did silkscreening for Sustainable Ballard and asked if our group was interested in having this service. There was a strong vote in the affirmative.
    2. Danielle had read in Conscious Choice that there is a group putting together green cleaning parties: this is getting people together to make green cleaning solutions. It was suggested that this could be the first movie night since there is a video involved in the kit on how to make solutions.
    3. Lanae said that the Abundant Life Church is available for sewing projects, or the movie night. Steps for making the reusable bags are 1. Bag design, 2. Cut the fabric, 3. Silkscreening artwork, 4. Sewing the bags. Danielle will follow up with talking with the artist.
