Sustainable Crown Hill Minutes
May 4, 2008
1.Walkable Crown Hill
Bert reported having 2 mailing lists:
-those who attend committee meetings.
-an informational listserve goes out each month or quarterly to a larger audience
Let Bert know if you want to change the list that you are on.
Carol Barber: Carol reported that Walkable Crown Hill is a collaborative project between Sustainable Crown Hill and Crown Hill Neighbors Assn. Right now it is a priority and receiving most of the efforts of the group. The goals are to make the neighborhood feel more like a neighborhood….calm traffic and community development.
Bert is the project manager for Walkable Crown Hill. We recently received a $15,000 Small and Simple Grant from the Department of Neighborhoods. We are in the process of hiring a consultant with interviews this coming week of three applicants; there were over 20 inquiries.
There will be two design charettes (workshops), which is a forum for neighbors to dream and imagine how they want the neighborhood to look. The consultants who we hire will help us identify what projects can be done in the next two to five years.
We intend to canvas the neighborhood next weekend for the following items:
1.WCH survey
2.advertise the dates for the upcoming charrettes
3.the citywide walking tour on May 17. This is part of the mayor’s Master Pedestrian Plan for the city. We will be meeting at the Crown Hill school after the Crown Hill Neighborhood Association’s meeting.
4.Bert has also acquired a speed gun that we will have for the next month; we need volunteers to assist in collecting data on how many cars, and how fast they are driving on our streets.
The goal is that at the end of September we will have a written plan on how to achieve the goals of Walkable Crown Hill.
Carol Barber: she highlighted that we are looking at non-traditional ways of calming traffic including art installations and street reclamation. There was a discussion on having potlucks prior to the charrettes. Several people volunteered, but those dates are yet to be firmed up.
Announcements:
1.Green Cleaning Party: May 16 at the Abundant Life Church basement; it will be a dessert potluck and Danielle will e-mail the list of items for people to bring.
2.Silkscreening bags: the design and construction of bags has yet to be discussed. There are concerns that silkscreening is not necessarily environmentally friendly. It was also stated that the city has submitted a proposal to eliminate plastic bags.
3.Natural Resource Stewardship Fund: there are grants between $2500- $20,000 available for reforestation that involves planting and using children.
4. It was mentioned that Nick Licata has a website for people to write in about pedestrian issues.
5. Sarah Lavilla has made scarves as a fundraiser for Crown Hill Neighborhood Association.
6. Michael Huber is interested in making a solar fruit dehydrator, and is looking for someone who is interested in that as well.
