Cloth Reusable Shopping Bags June 13, 2008

Posted by on Jun 04 2008 | Tagged as: Announcements, Green Choices

Getting tired of not having a sustainable choice at the grocery checkout line to the question “paper or plastic”?  The quality of those 99 cent imported bags from QFC and Freddie’s leaves a lot to be desired with almost no seam allowance, fabric that tears easily.  Let’s get our heads together. We’re going to be creating re-usable cloth shopping bags for ourselves. We have a bolt of otherwise unused fabric, and someone on hand to help us design attractive, sturdy, locally made market shopping bags.

Since this will be our first meeting we’ll need to decide several key things that will shape the future of the project.  We have lots of fabric so we don’t have to limit ourselves to making bags, should the creative inspiration hit someone.

If you have a sewing machine, bring it.  Also, bring scissors or rotary cutters, thread, pins, measuring tape – all that good stuff.  If you know other people who might be interested, feel free to bring them along.  If you have ideas for stenciling or painting on fabric, bring those ideas and materials you don’t mind sharing as well.

If everyone could bring a munchie or snack to share – it might help keep the ideas and fingers flying.

Saturday Night at the Movies: June 7 2008

Posted by on Jun 03 2008 | Tagged as: Announcements

Come to the inauguration of our Saturday Night at the Movies series. We’ll be screening King Corn, and having a great old time.

King Corn is a documentary about 2 friends, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, who move back to America’s Corn Belt to plant an acre of the nation’s most-grown and most-subsidized grain in an attempt to follow their crop into the U.S. food supply. What they discover about genetically modified seeds, powerful herbicides and the realities of modern farming calls into question government subsidies, our fast-food lifestyle and the quality of our food.

Saturday Night at the Movies: Dates Announced!!

Posted by on May 25 2008 | Tagged as: Announcements

Movie nights will be held on Saturday nights once a month. I am happy to host, but if they are well attended, an alternative location may be in order. For now, let’s start at my house: 10060 Mary Ave NW.
Movies will be chosen for their themes around sustainability, though once in a while we may need to break out and watch something fun. Stay tuned for schedule of movie titles.

To remain consistent with our pledge to Have a Blast, movies will be preceded by a potluck. People can come early for that, or just come for the movie. Or just for the potluck. As always, kids are welcome. We may need to bring a different movie for them.

Here are the dates: mark your calendars!
Potluck dinners will be from 6-7pm
Movies will start at 7:15pm
Saturday, June 7
Saturday, July 19
Saturday, August 16
Saturday, September 27
Saturday, October 25

Daffodil Action this Sunday 10-28-07

Posted by on Oct 25 2007 | Tagged as: Announcements

The guerilla daffodil action will be this Sunday at 8:30am

Why so early, you say. Because this is a highly sensitive guerilla style action that requires a high degree of secrecy and discretion. To that end, please come disguised as knaves or gorillas or whatever you want. Wear a wig. Don a ski mask. Put on a clown nose. That will confuse Small Faces, in case they happen by. And come with your tool of choice (we will be planting through sod so you will need something sturdy to cut through). And come with at least 50 daffodil bulbs, but the more the better. Fred Meyer has a bulb sale going on.

October Meeting Will Be a Party Instead
November’s Meeting Changed to 11-11-07

The Crown Hill Halloween Party that Danielle and Veronica have been organizing is taking place during our regular meeting time on Sunday, Oct 28. Plus we have the problem of our November meeting taking place during the thanksgiving weekend. So our October meeting is morphing into a party. We will need lots of hands to make it happen. Stay tuned for an email from Danielle and Veronica on all that needs to be done.

For our regular potluck and talking meeting, several sustainable peeps came up with the idea to have one October/November meeting on the 2nd Sunday in November, which is November 11.
